Day 42 - Ocean Shores WA - 6013 Miles

Six weeks and 6000 miles to get from Austin to the Pacific Ocean. We probably could have done it just as fast in a covered wagon.

To finish up our time in Olympia, I got a picture of the state capital.

I also found a bar/day care center I could spend time in if we end up in Olympia during summers.

I finally broke down and got on a horse. Mick and Linda were going riding and talked me into getting on Thunder before they left. I'm pretty sure this is how John Wayne got on horses, too, but I also could have used a railing on the steps.

The Posse Mounts Up
You can pretend this is a movie, because while I was up there I was trying desperately to keep him from moving. I don't think my horse ride included the horse actually taking a step.

While I was on Thunder, Phoenix kept glancing over thinking, I'm sure, "Thank God that's not me."

After my "ride" I developed my own style of dismount that was even less graceful than the mount. I won't go into details. Lets just say I expect the bruising to be gone by the end of the week.

The first thing we did in Ocean Shores was hit the beach. Clothing for hitting the beach in Washington ranges from a lot of skin to a look more appropriate for hitting the slopes. We were somewhere in between.

At the end of our stroll on the beach we saw a tour group of about 20 horses and riders. I was going to ask about taking the tour but it looked like not only didn't they have rails on the steps to get on the horses, they didn't even have steps!

We can see the ocean from our room, but it's over the treetops, across the dunes, and then you have to hope it's clear enough that things don't turn to fog before the actual coast. We can see it now but that may be a rarity. We're here for five nights.
