Day 10 - Rapid City SD - 2320 Miles

A great day yesterday. Leaving Medora behind, the rain eased. It didn't stop but the occasional drizzle was a welcome improvement. The temperature crept back up into the 50's. Now we just need a glimpse of sunshine and the winds to drop below 20 mph. I thought North Dakota looked empty driving across on the interstate. Then we headed south, perpendicular to the interstate for a couple hundred miles, and empty was taken to a whole other level. Samantha, our GPS, decided to rejoin us but she bailed out again after about two hours. The real highlight of the day was going to Best Buy after reaching the metropolis of Rapid City, SD. We took Samantha in and explained how we bought her a month ago in Austin and how she had become quite uncooperative of late. We had no receipt, no box, and about half the things that came in the box. Customer Service was able to look up our purchase based on my "Reward Zone" membership. They swapped out my GPS at no cost. People can say what they will about Best Buy, but I love them.

Since the new GPS also uses the voice of Samantha, I had to think of a new name. Samantha II? Sammie? I finally went with the simple "Sam". Terry thought I spent way too much time on this dilemma, but she just doesn't understand that special bond between a man and his GPS.

Today we drove into Wyoming to Devil's Tower. I should try to come up with something related to aliens or the mothership, but it's all been done before. I'll just put up the pictures of Devil's Tower and the surrounding countryside. We took the trail all the way around the tower and could see 8-10 climbers. Personally I question their sanity, but who am I to judge. My current camera has a 20x optical zoom, so I was able to get some good shots of them.

I also was thrilled I got to wave my park pass at the entrance rather than pay. I'll break even on it yet.
